The special historic site, “Fort Goryokaku” is Japan’s first Western-style fort completed in 1864. Moving into the modern age in Japan, there was a civil war between the existing ruler Samurai and the emperor-centered government. Goryokaku was the headquarters of the samurai at that time.

Today, it is a park and it is one of the most popular cherry blossoms viewing spots in Japan.
